Current CS Science and Technology (Sci-Tech) Options

Effective Fall 2018, DESMA is not a listed Sci-Tech Option because of the enrollment stress on this small department. If you have already started taking some of these courses prior to Fall 18, you may propose other dept courses that make sense for this area e.g. CS 174A or 188 (Depending on the topic). All courses subject to review; please attach syllabi and petition in advance of taking courses. It is possible that you will need to select and take 3 courses from a different area.

Option 4: Life Science Prep

Take 3 courses from CHEM 20A, 20B, 30A, (LIFESCI 3 or 7A).

This combination of courses can be use to acquire prerequisites for the Genomics or Pre-med TBR or the Bioinformatics minor

**LS 7A will not automatically apply because can be picked up as a LS GE. To have it moved to Sci-Tech, please submit a petition and plan to take an alternate Life Science GE.

Option 5: Create your own

Propose 3 upper division courses that can be unified under one cohesive area/theme

This is not an easier route or a good fit if you don’t already have an idea and plan of what you want to do.
However, if none of the options above fit what you had in mind for something you feel strongly about and want to learn about, then a great option may be to try and propose an ad-hoc Sci-Tech area.

These Science and Technology electives should have a technical/analytical component. This does not automatically exclude classes in humanities; some humanities courses include a scientific approach, many do not. There is a fundamental difference between a class that is based on subjective artistry or a historical chronology, etc and a class that is based on the scientific quantification of objective phenomena or the engineering process of design and verification. Proposals should clearly outline how this area you are proposing is supplementing your degree and is related to your future plans.
You know what you want to do, but you have no idea what classes might get you there? This is a great question for your faculty advisor. They can suggest questions, or connect you with maybe some peers who might have recommendations.
It is okay to mix and match courses from different departments and group them together (Example: Technology and Society is an area that has been proposed and approved with courses from Digital Humanities, CS, Sociology, and Communications)
It is encouraged to submit a proposal for more than 3 classes to give some flexibility to find 3 classes that can be approved.
Approval is not guaranteed, so please petition in advance of taking any courses and have a back up plan. Please note that this review may take longer than other Sci-tech petitions.
Enrollment access to the departments listed below is at the respective department’s discretion. There is no guarantee of access to the courses. Enrollment is usually restricted for 1st pass, and you may have to work with staff and or faculty in other departments to access their classes after their own majors have had a chance to enroll, i.e. this will take some extra leg work and you have to really want it to persist. Again, this is not a good “I guess I’ll do this” option.
You are responsible for meeting prerequisites to enroll. You may petition ONE lower division prerequisite course with the upper division course that listed that pre-requisite course specifically.
