Emissions late fee payment system information

State law requires DMV to assess a $20 late fee to the owner of a vehicle who did not meet the deadline to complete required emissions testing.

This online system allows you to make emissions late fee payments only. You may have more than one late fee or could have multiple vehicles with late fees due.

After completing your payment, be sure to print and keep a copy of your receipt for your records. A payment confirmation will also be sent by email. Please remember, this is only a payment receipt.

Per Connecticut General Statute 14-50(f), whenever a payment of any fee to the DMV by means of a credit or debit card is rejected or dishonored, the DMV will charge a fee of $35 for a payment amount of not more than $200, and a fee of 15% of any payment in excess of $200, plus all protest fees or charges to cover the cost of the collection.

I have yet to pay my late fee. Will I still be able to renew my registration?

Yes. DMV provides a temporary reprieve for vehicle owners which allows them to register vehicles while still owing a late fee. However, DMV advises vehicle owners to make their late fee payments when they receive a notice.

I no longer own the vehicle, why did I get a notice for a late fee?

The late fee notice was sent to the owner of the vehicle at the time the test deadline was missed.

I moved out of state; do I still have to pay the emissions late test fee?

Yes, the emissions test late fee was assessed at a time when the vehicle was still listed on record as being registered in the state of Connecticut.

I mailed my late fee to DMV. Will I be mailed a receipt for my payment?

No. You will not be mailed a receipt following a mailed payment. Please keep a copy of your late fee notice, and check or money order for your records. You can also check the payment status online. Please allow time for the payment to be processed before checking the status.

I recently moved. How do I know if my late fee was sent to the correct address?

The emissions late fee notice will be mailed to the vehicle owner’s current address on file at DMV.

I provided my e-mail address when I paid my late fee online. What will my address be used for?

The email address provided during the online late fee payment process is used to send a confirmation receipt for payment. It doesn’t sign up the customer for any further official notices from DMV.

I just had my vehicle tested for emissions and I was told I owe a late fee. Can I pay my fee now?
